Real Magnum en Magnum Lite
Real photography is a wonderfully inclusive, democratic medium, whereas “art photography” is more often a private pursuit by conmen.
Magnum cannot be relied upon for direction. There are in fact two Magnums today: Real Magnum and Magnum Lite. Unfortunately, those in the latter camp have taken over the agency aided by staff members eager to promote inanities. I predicted this outcome over ten years ago. There are monumental changes taking place in teh world of photography and certainly within Magnum. Confusion reigns. Copyright protection was one of the main pillars on which Magnum was built-yet, last June, we members of the agency were being persuaded by the latest industry expert to remove the copyright signs from our photographs, to encourage theft of our pictures as a way to publicize them.
Long before I joined Magnum, I devoured every bit of information about the organization, so there were few surprizes. So many discussions were boring, as I usually knew what everybody was going to say before they said it. Over the years I saw the best, and the worst, of behavior, with perhaps the subversion of democracy the most egrerious example. I've always considered witnessing the perfidy of others to be an educational experience!
